Introduction
In a statement released on 8 October 2025, the Spiritan Order have reassured victims of historical child sexual abuse perpetrated by members of their Order that progress is being made in finalising a scheme aimed at compensating survivors. The Order was responding to recent demands from advocacy groups for swifter action.
Background
In June 2025, Fr. Brendan Carr, Provincial Leader of the Spiritan Order, published an open letter to victims of historical abuse under the Order’s care. In that letter, Fr. Carr committed to publishing full details of a new Redress Scheme, intended to deliver both financial and moral restitution to survivors, by the end of Summer 2025.
To date, no such details have been released, prompting frustration among survivors and advocacy groups who have voiced concern at the perceived lack of urgency in implementing the scheme.
Latest Update
In its statement, the Spiritan Order have accepted that progress has not “been as fast as anyone would wish” but deny that they are “deliberately delaying or obstructing progress” The statement provided further details of the Order’s financial position and stated that it does not currently have sufficient liquid assets to launch the Redress Scheme. The statement explained that several sales of school-related properties and farmland are in progress to generate the funds required to compensate survivors. These transactions, which include the proposed sale of Rockwell Farm in Tipperary, must undergo valuation, regulatory approval and conveyancing before completion.
The Order also emphasised the importance of ensuring the scheme’s long-term financial sustainability and compliance with charity governance requirements.
No timeline has yet been provided for the finalisation or launch of the redress scheme, but the Order have reiterated their commitment to victims.
